Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 marks the beginning of Power Rangers. The storyline that began from the first episode "Day of the Dumpster" continued until Power Rangers in Space "Countdown to Destruction". A variety of Ranger traditions and laws were pre-defined in the first season. These traditions include protecting the Ranger identity and working together as a team.

Rita Repulsa and her group of minions were released from a dumpster located on the moon. She immediately makes herself at home in a palace on the moon and sets her eyes on the Planet Earth. Zordon feels her presence and informs Alpha 5 to teleport 5 teenagers to the Command Center. Five down-to-earth and good-mannered high school students are teleported to the Command Center where they meet Zordon and Alpha 5. The teenagers are Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Billy, and Trini. At first, they are skeptical about the concept of being a Power Rangers. They find their destiny after their first encounter with the Putty Patrol. By raising their Morphers in the air and calling forth their Dinosaurs, the teenagers transform into the Power Rangers.

The Rangers use Dino Zords, robotic forms of their Dinosaur spirits, to face monsters in their large form. The five Dino zords can combine into the Megazord.

Tommy Oliver, a legend in Power Rangers history, makes his appearance as the new student and martial artist in Angel Grove. Rita chooses him to be perfect candidate to hand down her Green Power Coin. With an evil spell and green wax, she gives Tommy the power of the Green Ranger and a new mission to destroy the Power Rangers. Green Ranger succeeds in causing damage to the Command Center, including to Zordon. With the Sword of Darkness and the Dragonzord, Green Ranger proved to be a powerful opponent against the Rangers. After a series of battles, Zordon returns and the Rangers discover the Green Ranger's identity as Tommy. Jason destroys the Sword of Darkness, causing Tommy to return to the side of good. Tommy joins the Power Rangers as the sixth Ranger.

Green Ranger's Dragonzord helped the Rangers with two new Formations: Dragonzord in Battle Mode and MegaDragonzord. The Rangers gain control of Titanus, the Carrier Zord. All of the zords combined form the Ultrazord, an unstoppable zord combination.

Rita uses the remaining of the evil green wax to create a Green Candle. The candle had the magic to strip Tommy from his Green Ranger powers. Jason tried to get the candle in time, but was pulled into battle to protect Green Ranger. One powerful phrase comes to mind as Tommy holds onto his powers: "You can't take my powers Rita, I'm the Green Ranger!". Tommy was unfortunating wrong when the last flame of the Green Candle extinguished. In the nick of time, Tommy transferred his powers to Jason, who now controlled the Green Power Shield and the Dragonzord.

Tommy was destined to return when Rita and Goldar's plot to take the Rangers' Power Coins succeeded after capturing their parents. Zordon infused his own powers into the Green Power Coin. Tommy returned as the Green Ranger and returned the Power Coins to his friends.
